- the gift giver supplies a selection of photographs + stories from the person's life
- scan the images and a graphic designer assembles the comic using these photos and some other pre-prepared images/backgrounds.
You'd need to keep the style of artwork relatively abstract so that it's not inaccurate, for example in terms of the layout of the person's town or home etc. Also, because it' be pretty labor intensive for the graphic designer/illustrator, you'd have to charge a nice high price tag!
